Being on time for school and regular attendance develops student responsibility and continuity of education. Satisfactory progress in school depends to a large extent on regular attendance. Absences create problems for both students and teachers. Students who are frequently absent get behind in their school work and tend to lose interest in school.

All absences are to be reported to the attendance line at 328- 3301. If a message is not received, the office will attempt to contact parents/guardians at home or at work. If the parents/guardians did not call in and contact was not made, the student is to bring a note stating the date(s) of the absence and the reason. The note must be brought prior to school starting in the morning. Students who return from an absence, arrive late, or leave early must check in/out of the office.

Excused absences are given for the following reasons: student illness or injury, illness or death in the family, pre-excused medical and dental appointments and requests for absences approved by the school administrators. Make-up work is to be requested at this time. (The teacher will determine when make-up work is due.) Parents are encouraged to make appointments for dental and medical services after school hours. As the school recognizes this is not always possible, children will be excused for appointments during school hours if a parent/guardian comes into the office and signs the student out/in on the Student Check-Out/In sheet.

Full-time, regular attendance at school is expected and required. Any child who is truant from class/school for seven or more times within the current school year will be referred to the County Department of Social Services or other appropriate agencies. Excessive absences and/or tardiness, even with a parental excuse, may result in detention, suspension, or the filing of a
truancy petition in district court according to Minnesota Law.

Students are to remain in the building or on school property once they arrive at school and until they are dismissed at the end of the school day. Students will be counted unexcused if they leave their classroom without school approval or without checking out. Students who have pre-approved excuses for part of the day may leave the school property ONLY when accompanied by their parent/guardian and are to check in at the office when they return to school.
